Very first gumoil print(s)!
After Gordon Holtslander introduced me to gumoil, and Jim Hoyle pointed me in the right direction with a Karl Koenig video-- and I managed to snag Koenig's book, Gumoil Photographic Printing, for a mere $30-- I was intrigued.
This is my first gumoil. No bleaching or etching was done, and only one layer of oil here. It could be better, for sure, but not a bad start. A fascinating process. I look forward to doing more.
This particular image (umbrella tree) itself was made by Art Howard, videographer and still photographer extraordinaire.

I've added a few more gumoils here since this first one I made above. This is a very difficult process, and these are not yet where I want them to be, but here's what I printed so far that's worthy of being posted.

Altered Narratives at City Gallery, Waterfront Park, Charleston
Altered Narratives opened last weekend at the City Gallery in Charleston was wonderful. All the participating artists but three made the trip. Stunning work and a broad range of alternative processes exhibited, including Maureen Delaney's lumen prints; Sandy King's carbon transfer prints; Rebecca Sexton Larson's bromoils; Doug Etheridge's lith prints; and more . . . Do go see this amazing array of compelling imagery if you're in or near Charleston! On exhibit through May 1.
Tri-color gum bichromate workshop at Art Intersection! April 9 and 10
Join me for another tricolor gum bichromate workshop at the amazing Art Intersection, located in Gilbert, Arizona. On April 9 and 10, we'll be learning tricolor gum bichromate printing, using separation negatives. You'll leave with some beautiful prints and the knowledge to continue on your own, after the workshop. This is such a fun, creative process, and a beautiful place in which to learn it. The workshop will be on Saturday, April 9 from 10-4, and again on Sunday, April 10, from 10-4. I'll also be giving an artist lecture on Friday, April 9, from 6:30 to 8 pm, which is free and open to the public. And you can check out the details for that here.

I am honored to have one of my gum bichromate prints, In the River, accepted into the Raleigh Fine Arts Society 2016 North Carolina Artists Exhibition. This exhibit was juried by Bradley Sumrall, Chief Curator and Collections Manager of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, in New Orleans.
Bradley Sumrall is Chief Curator and Collections Manager of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. The Ogden Museum is one of the leading museums in the United States focusing on the richness and diversity of art of the American South and houses the largest and most comprehensive assemblage of Southern art in the world from 1733 to the present.
The juror will be giving a lecture on Sunday, March 6, from 4-5, and the opening reception follows. Hope to see you there at the Betty McCain Gallery, in Meymandi Hall, downtown Raleigh.
Tilt Gallery celebrates 11 successful years with exhibit and a Silent Auction!
I'm so proud and honored to be a part of Tilt Gallery, out in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona. Michelle and Melanie Craven are the two amazing sisters who run this Gallery so beautifully. Congratulations to both of them. And don't miss their Silent Auction, curated by Ellee Bokharachi, celebrating 11 years!
Altered Narratives
When Christine Eadie, contemporary tintype artist, and I first met-- at an alternative process exhibit in which we both had work hanging-- at the Univ of SC a year or so ago, we talked about how great it would be to create a show similar to that, perhaps in Charleston. Christine was up for doing all the heavy lifting, since she lives in Charleston-- but she told me she had no idea about which artists to possibly invite. So I gave her the names and contact information for all but two of the artists who will be in this exhibit. Admittedly (selfishly), they were some of my favorite artists who are making beautiful contemporary imagery, using 19th century printing processes.
Thanks to Christine for all the hard work of herding the cats and helping to make all this come to fruition. The show, Altered Narratives, opens at the beautiful City Gallery at Waterfront Park, located in Charleston South Carolina, on March 18.
